We were keen to create an urban oasis acting as a tranquil retreat from the bustling city that is London.
This project was shaped by the tight footprint of the site and characterised by finding ways to create feelings of spaciousness and expanse. We kept it simple and uncomplicated but took every opportunity to maximise gains where possible.
We were keen for each room to have its own individual character, creating intuitive shifts in gear as you move through the house. Oak is kept as a key motif to connect spaces to each other while materiality changes throughout the house,
On entering the space, a glazed wall on the upper floor allows light to funnel into the ground level.
Creating a relationship between different levels of the house is a key feature of making the house work.
Externally, we were keen for the house to contrast with the surrounding Victorian terrace houses. Appearing as a monolith, hung tiles and render blend into each other to produce a gentle docking next to adjacent buildings.
