As creatives themselves, our clients approached us to help them find a cool contemporary solution to extending their apartment in Nunhead, wanting it to feel creative and refined while still feeling warm and homely. We loved this brief and worked with them to develop a textured, warm material palette that’s on the domestic side of industrial.

The use of oak to give warmth to the atmosphere, and the use of painted brickwork to give texture and depth, has created a joyful space that adds greatly to their quality of life. Often the challenge with extending a historic property is in creating a space that relates to the requirements of the contemporary and also respects the historic. Here we have created a distinction between both and referenced the historic building materials and methods. The use of reclaimed bricks and pavers externally adds a depth of character and gives a nod to the history of the house.
